James Wilbur (Bill) Carlyle was taken home by his Lord and Savior on July 23, 2012, after a brief battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease). He was born in Whiteville, NC on May 22, 1931, to the late Vade and Dace Carlyle. Mr. Carlyle earned a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1953. After serving two years in the Air Force, he joined Alcoa Aluminum in Badin, NC. In 1962 he went to work for Baxter-Travenol Laboratories in Kingstree, SC, where he eventually became plant manager. Mr. Carlyle then became the first plant manager at the North Cove, NC Baxter-Travenol plant, and ultimately retired as Vice President of Manufacturing-International Division. During his career, Mr. Carlyle served on numerous Boards of Directors including Hospital, United Fund, Technical Education Center, Chamber of Commerce, and Western Carolina Industries.
He was active in the Wolfpack Club for almost 60 years, and enjoyed following all sports. He was a longtime member of the Creedmoor Road Baptist Church in Raleigh.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Helen E. Carlyle. Living on to cherish his memory are his two sons, Mel Carlyle (Lisa) of Lexington, SC, and Stan Carlyle of Mt. Pleasant, SC; two daughters, Jamie Carlyle of Alexandria, VA, and Cindy Mixson (David) of Beaufort, SC; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, James (Jack) Carlyle of Sun City, AZ, and Ertle Carlyle (Betty) of Holly Ridge, NC; and one sister, Opal Hobbs (Richard) of Holly Ridge, NC.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, July 26, 2012 from 10-11 AM at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue). A Memorial Service will follow at 11 AM in the funeral home chapel.
