Jacqueline Wyke Brown went home to be with the Lord on June 11, 2022, at the age of 84 in Raleigh, NC. She was born in Taylorsville, NC on November 15, 1937, to Ruby Virginia White and Fred Wyke. Jackie attended Jackson Park Elementary School and A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis. She was active in Grace Baptist Church, and it was there that she met her lifelong sweetheart, Dallas Brown. From age 16 on their lives were beautifully intertwined, one never very far from the other.
After graduating from high school, Jackie attended Charlotte Beauty School and became a skilled hairdresser, affording her the opportunity to enroll in Mars Hill College in the fall of 1957, where she earned a Commercial Certificate in Business. Following Dallas’ graduation from North Carolina State University, he and Jackie were married on August 30, 1958. God graciously gave them 63 years of married life together. Other than one year in Atlanta and a short time in Biloxi, Mississippi, while Dallas was serving in the United States National Guard, they lived the entirety of their lives in North Carolina – 29 years in Charlotte and 34 years in Raleigh.
Jackie will be remembered for her love for her family, her devotion to Jesus Christ, and her service to others. She and Dallas raised two daughters, Beth and Beverly, and treasured time spent with their families, especially the grandchildren to whom she was affectionately known as “Mimi.” Jackie was industrious and had a heart to serve those less fortunate. She taught the Bible to younger women at First Baptist Church, Charlotte and ministered in practical ways to the elderly, widows, and those in nursing homes. Jackie was an extraordinary seamstress, making curtains, clothes, quilts and countless little girl dresses. She loved to sew! One of those projects included making heirloom quality burial garments for babies who died prematurely in the hospital, a ministry of her church. Jackie was also gifted by the Lord in hospitality and enjoyed serving people in her home and making it a beautiful, warm, and welcoming place. Her life was characterized by service – serving the Lord by serving others.
In 1987, Jackie and Dallas moved to Raleigh where they joined Providence Baptist Church. They invested their time and energy in a variety of ways including Monday Night Bible Study, Flock Small Group Ministry, Single Adult Ministry, the Martha Ministry (an organization which serves the needs of grieving families), and Grandmothers at Prayer (GAP). The friendships and relationships formed at Providence enriched their lives and encouraged them through this part of their journey.
One of Jackie’s favorite passages of scripture was Psalm 91, which says: “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. . . . With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” The Lord was her refuge and his faithfulness was her shield, and he did indeed bless her with a long life and salvation.
Jackie is survived by her two daughters, Beth Conner of Fuquay-Varina, Beverly (Tim) McCoy of Macon, GA, five grandchildren, Clark (Holly) Conner, Cameron Conner, Kendall Conner, Meredith (Bradley) McCoy Patton, and Molly McCoy, two great-grandchildren, Edison Conner and Alexander Conner.
The family will receive friends at Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 17, with a “Time of Remembrance” from 4:00-4:15 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC.
