Dear Mrs. Shelby, I was so saddenend to hear of your loss. I just heard yesterday and I had you all on my mind just the week before, not knowing what you were going through.  I live in Smithfield and go to church outside of Four Oaks and think of your smiling face often. I would love to see you. You were introduced to me as Grumpy. You proved to me over the years you were anything but Grumpy.  I learned so much from you during the time we sold Clark Ave.  From then on, you were never to busy to stop and talk when you were passing by.  We spent hours chatting about real estate and condo issues! I will miss you more than words can describe.  There will always be a big hole where Jack was...but now you have gone to a better place.

I met Jack while eating breakfast 2 years ago. He would sit and talk about everything, his new tile jobs, the trip to Florida, the condo in Florida, a recent fishing trip. He was always a pleasure to see and talk to over coffee. I enjoyed talking about the good old days in Raleigh. Just last week he mentioned his deceased brother, and an Uncle that he was quite fond of. I sure will miss his smiling face and the great discussion over coffee. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

I am a regular at Finch's and have known Jack for several years. We used to talk about things all the time, especially having to do with health and Dr. Kulp! I noticed he was looking ill recently but was surprised at his sudden death. He was very proud of his family and spoke highly of all of you, to me. My deepest regrets.

Dear Shelby,  Mary Lynn called last night to tell me about Jack.  What do I say?  First, I am so sorry, and know that you are in our thoughts an prayers.  As you know, Jack was like a brother to me...I knew him for seventy years.  I have so many good memories of our childhood.  In fact, a friend said to me the other day you should write a book about your early life.  You know who would be on the front page.  I was the only girl in the neighborhood, and I think that I have told you before..I was the most picked on..I was the one who went home crying, but soon learned that I could take my part and beat up on Jack, John Flint, Sonny and Conway.  I will never forget how I pushed Jack into the Erwin's (next door on Clark Ave.) fish pond..he chased me home, threw a big clump of red clay into our front hall..as he was running around back, my daddy threw a bucket of water on his head...and there was the baby doll story...how Jack threw my rubber doll into the bushes in his back yard..and then said he didn't.  Of course, at least one year later when they were pruning those same bushes...there was my rotten baby doll.  I was so angry.  I guess the story that tops them off would be:  Jack stood in front of the class (probably 1st grade) and said, "Margie still sleeps in a crib."  He was not going to embarass me..to which I sid, "Well, at least I don't still drink out of a coke bottle with a nipple on it."  Both are true ..I was still in a crib in first grade and he was still drinking from a baby bottle.   We both got a big laugh from the class.  I could go on and on! Shelby...I loved that boy because he was part of my family and the only brother I ever had...he took up for me so many times.  I will miss him dearly, and I will miss seeing you.  My sympathy to Betsy, your children and family. Love you, Margie
