

Henry Walton “Walt” Moore Jr. passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2024 in his home in Raleigh, NC, surrounded by the love of his family and friends who visited him daily in his final weeks. Born on November 27, 1935, in Hillsborough, NC, to the late Dr. Henry Walton Moore and Lenna Davis Moore, he was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Fowler Moore, and his brother, William “Bill” Davis Moore.
After graduating from The Blue Ridge School for Boys in 1954, Walt joined the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne in 1956. Following his service, he attended Campbell University from 1958 to 1959 before earning his degree in Math, with double minors in General Science and History, from High Point University in 1961. While at High Point, he was a member of the Sigma Pi Epsilon Fraternity.
Walt met Julia Leach Fowler of Morganton, NC, on a blind date during college. They married on August 12, 1961 and were married for over 56 years. He worked for the North Carolina Department of Labor for two years before transitioning to Ford Motor Company as an outside salesman. Walt and Julia proudly owned two Moore’s Auto Parts Carquest stores for 18 years. After selling the stores, Walt’s passion for the auto parts business led him to a 12 year career with General Parts as an outside salesman, where he continued until the age of 70.
Walt was deeply involved in his church communities. He served on numerous committees at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church; including serving as Trustee Chairman for six years. He was an active choir member and participated in several mission trips before transferring his membership to Trinity Baptist Church, where he continued to support mission trips and contributed to the choir and Sunday School Class. One of his Choir highlights from Trinity was performing at Carnegie Hall. He was also a Master Mason and active member of both the Kiwanis and Civic Clubs.
Walt and Julia enjoyed traveling, both with friends and on their own, visiting most states in the U.S. and many countries in Europe. He also had a passion for gardening, baking pies; which he gave away to brighten friends’ days, voice lessons, and sharing stories.
Walt is survived by his two daughters: Laura Kate Moore Barnes, her husband Mike, and their children Kate, Alex, and Hannah; and Elizabeth Ann Moore Compo, her husband Charles, and their children Charlotte, Matt, and Melody.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 23, 2024 at Trinity Baptist Church, followed by a visitation. The family will attend inurnment at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church in Cedar Grove, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Baptist Church.
