Henry Samuel Addison, Jr. passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. Henry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He was a positive role model and mentor to his family and many others. Henry was a strong Christian and an ordained Deacon. Married to Dorothy Daniel Addison, Henry cherished his relationship with his wife of sixty- nine years. Their son, Marty, and daughter, Amy, loved their father and have benefited from his wisdom, grace, and humor all of their lives. Henry was a beloved brother to Barbara Ann Tilley (Larry) and Daniel Addison (Roberta). He enjoyed being with Dorothy’s family, Vernon Daniel (Brenda), Osby Daniel Jr. (Nancy), and Linda Daniel Marshall. Henry was proud to be an uncle to his nieces and nephews and their families- Blake and Todd Addison, Tara Tilley Johnson, Jason Marshall, Angie Marshall Cox, Mark Daniel, and Monica Daniel Brame. His parents were Henry and Leola Addison, whom he loved and greatly admired.
Marty and wife, Polly Fussell Addison, have three sons, Blake, Lee, and Miles. Amy and husband, Fred Kelly, have a daughter, Lillian. Henry was a loving and involved grandfather who spent his retirement being a part of his grandchildren’s daily lives. However, all the grandchildren knew that if they had a question, it needed to wait until after the Duke ballgame. Henry was an avid reader and wrote two books of his own, one about his career and life growing up in the South and the other about his beloved family pets through the years. He had an incredible memory and enjoyed telling interesting stories about his days as Vice President of Grand Union. Henry was valedictorian of his high school class and was awarded scholarships to UNC, Duke, and attended Michigan State and Cornell University. He was always active and walked four miles a day at a brisk pace. Henry is forever loved by his family and friends and was a blessing to us all.
A private celebration of Henry’s life will take place later this week.
