Helen was the youngest of three children born in Cleveland, Ohio. Her family immigrated to the United States from Hungary. Hungarian was spoken in her home and all of the various traditions and foods were also shared there. The family belonged to St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church.
Helen met and married the love of her life Al Bedo in 1945. At first living with Al's parents the couple was able in a few years to move with their two children, Judy and Paul to Walton Hills, Ohio a beautiful suburb of Cleveland. They raised their children there.
In 1974 they moved to Raleigh, North Carolina to start a new business which became a marvelous journey for them. Both of their children moved to North Carolina to be involved with the business. The business prospered. The family grew. The family enjoyed many adventurous travels together. Helen loved returning to Hungary many times.
Helen and Al were founding members of St. Frances of Assisi in Raleigh. Helen loved religious art and donated many beautiful pieces to St. Frances of Assisi and Cardinal Gibbons.
After Al's death Helen continued to work in the family business until her 70th birthday.
At 92 Helen moved to Waltonwoods Retirement Center to live in an independent apartment. She enjoyed many friends there. Every Sunday she entertained family at brunch. Everyone knew her as the lady who reminded them to wear their name tags. She never failed to stop to chat on her way in or out of the dining room. She loved going to Wednesday church services and never missed a hair appointment. Her great-grandchildren always knew there was ice cream in her refrigerator for them.
Helen is preceded in death by her dear husband, Al.
She leaves behind her daughter; Judy Bedo Gorman; son Paul Bedo and his wife Linda; granddaughters Emily Bedo Knick and husband Travis Knick, and Rebecca Beck and husband Anthony “Joey" Beck; and her beloved great-grandchildren: Anderson Knick who always lovingly got her omelet for her on Sundays; Jeremy Knick who she said had a soft, soft heart; Samantha Knick her only great-granddaughter who she called a fashionista and loved seeing her various outfits; and Orin Beck who she called her little artist.
Helen will be missed by all who knew and loved her. We will remember her each time we have ice cream since it was her absolutely favorite food.
We pray with all the saints in heaven and especially St. Elizabeth of Hungary in thanksgiving for her life and her love as she joins Jesus Christ and her husband Al in her heavenly home.
A funeral Mass celebrating Helen's long and loving life will be held Friday, February 22 at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church at 200 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh. A luncheon will follow immediately at Casa Carbone Restaurant at 6019 Glenwood Avenue. Internment will be private.
