Bud was not only our close friend, fellow law enforcement confidante, close neighbor at Caswell, and all-around advisor but also someone who treated you with respect, kindness, and great dignity.   We can see him now riding his bike up and down Caswell Beach Road waving to us or sitting on his porch of the beach house waiting to greet me as I ran by each morning.   You will be truly missed, good friend and there will never be anyone else to come up to your standards of friendship and loyalty.   Peter and Lillian

Bud James, what a nice, kind, God fearing man he was! Always smiling and happy. Had such great conversations with him. You just gravitated to him because of his personality. He lived just a couple blocks from me. I would see him walking the dog or riding his bicycle. He will be surely missed!

Brother-in-law Bud taught us all to laugh and enjoy each and every day... Little beloved dog Happy even learned to enjoy a saucer of tea with Marianna, Lyn and Bud at afternoon tea time. Amazing love story..

Bud was always the happiest person in the room. I always enjoyed talking with him and will truly miss our conversations.

Bud was an extraordinary/remarkable volunteer not only in the Naturalist Center but also at the front desk at the Museum of Natural Sciences.  No matter how my day was going he always had that wonderful smile and encouraging words or a joke.  You will be missed greatly by your Museum family.

I worked with Bud in the Naturalist Center at the museum. When we were very crowded and feeling a little stressed I would look over at Bud and his smile would make all the stress go away.. He was the best with greeting the visitors. Thanks to Bud for many great moments.

I was fortunate to work with Bud in the Naturalist Center on Thursdays.  He was a truly nice person; kind and funny and always interested in others.  He gave me Spider Lily bulbs last year and they are blooming now.  Every morning when I step outside I see them and think of Bud.  I know I will always remember Bud when the Spider Lilies bloom. Bud probably knew my sister better than me.  They both loved to talk and I imagine the two of them are talking in heaven right now.  I know he had to be a man of integrity and intelligence because he chose a beautiful woman to be his wife and the two of them had a wonderful life together.  My sincere sympathy to the family.   Prayers and thoughts to you all.

I knew and will remember Bud as a decent, caring, and loving man with a fine sense of humor. When his son, Clay, married our daughter, Cindy, Sybil and I were so pleased and even more so when we got to know Bud, Marianna and the rest of the lovely family they raised. He will be dearly missed. God rest his soul.

I met Bud in 2013 when he began volunteering in the Naturalist Center at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.  Except for summers when he would spend time at his beach house, Bud was at the Museum every week. Any day that Bud walked into the Naturalist Center was a good day! Bud was a colleague, but also a good friend.  He was exceptional in his ability to talk to visitors and staff and make everyone feel special.  I will remember many things about him but especially how he liked to clean and his love for milkshakes.  We will miss him so much.

It was with acute regret that I received the sad news of Bud's passing. I am also a volunteer at the museum and it was always a pleasure for me to find that we were scheduled on the same day.  He was truly a remarkable and memorable personality and one who will be sorely missed.  I am grateful to have known him.
