Harry was born on December 27, 1927, in Bangor, Pennsylvania to the late Samuel and Mabel Bittenbender Hahn.
After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Army, and eventually worked at the Office of Strategic Services (a U.S. intelligence agency that preceded the CIA). During his work with the OSS and CIA, he met the love of his life, Toyo. As she was a foreign national, he could not marry her without giving up his job. He returned to the states but promised to come back for her: a star-crossed love story worthy of the most fantastical novels. He kept his word, they married on April 9, 1956, and remained devoted to each other for over 65 years.
Harry did find another position and worked for USAID until retirement. He took a well-deserved rest, spending time with his two children and painting his very tall house, but he couldn’t stay put for long and took a job with the Environmental Protection Agency where he made many good friends.
Harry most recently lived at Windsor Point Retirement Community, where he helped take care of the library and was know for his sense of humor. Harry was a notoriously fast typist, a practical joker, a caring husband, and a wonderful father and grandfather. He made an impact on everyone he interacted with and was loved by all.
Harry is survived by his wife of 66 years, Toyo Hahn; his son, Jeff and daughter-in-law Carol, his daughter Tricia and son-law Gary, and four grandchildren – Chris, Katie, Hunter, and Cassie.
Funeral Services will be private.
In Lieu of Flowers, Memorial Donations may be made in Harry’s honor to the charity of your choice.
