Geraldine Chambless Fry, age 92, went home to be with the Lord on November 21, 2012, at Springmoor’s Stewart Health Center in Raleigh. Born in Greenville, Mississippi, on December 23, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Louis F. Chambless and the late Beulah Hampton Chambless, of Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Wilmont Fry, who died in 2007.
Gerry graduated from Hugh Morrison High School where she excelled in sports and was a “superlative” athlete. She went on to Peace College and met her husband while he was an athlete at NC State College. They raised their family in Edenton, NC, where she was a homemaker, home-school coordinator in the Edenton-Chowan School System for several years and was very involved in the community. Gerry enjoyed golf, her favorite pastime; playing bridge and was an avid Wolfpack fan. She was a faithful member of Edenton Methodist Church. After fifty three years in Edenton, they moved to Springmoor Retirement Community, and she lived there for twelve years where she made new friends and continued to play golf at age 80. She was a member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church in Raleigh. Gerry had a sweet spirit and kind way and was the mainstay of the family, all of whom she loved very much.
Gerry is survived by her son, Cecil Fry, Jr., of Charleston, SC; son, Michael Fry, of Wake Forest, NC; daughter, Arlene Bagwell and husband, Ronnie Bagwell, of Raleigh; granddaughters, Michelle Mosher of Salisbury, MD, and Melissa Swoope and husband, Sheridan, of Chesapeake, VA; grandsons, Jeff Fry and Steve Fry and wife, Michelle, of Raleigh, Chris Fry and wife, Debbie, of Chesapeake VA; nine great granddaughters and one new great-great grandson; many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the Springmoor staff, nurses, aides, and to Dr. Wells Edmundson for their compassionate care.
A graveside service at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 28, 2012, with a memorial service following at 2:00 p.m. at Springmoor Auditorium, 1500 Sawmill Road. Family will receive friends immediately following this service.
