George Washington Sloan, Sr. passed away on December 8, 2013 into the open arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born on February 22, 1921 in Lee County, NC to Alvin Jones Sloan and Amelia Jordan Sloan. His parents died when he was a young boy and so he was raised at the Elon Home for Children in Elon, NC from age 8. He married his sweetheart, Mary Margaret Wade, on March 15, 1942.
George served in the 3rd Army with Dog Battery, 119th AAA Gun Battalion under the command of General George S. Patton which carried out combat operations in France, Belgium, and Germany during World War II. During that time the 119th participated in five major campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was known by his fellow soldiers as “Rocky” and was described as someone who “always had a big smile on his face.”
George retired from Westinghouse Meter Division in 1985 after 35 years of service.
He accepted Christ as his Personal Savior and faithfully served his Lord for over 64 years. He was a personal testimony to all who knew him. He lovingly cared for his wife of 71 years up until his death.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Sloan; his daughter Judith Johnson and husband Dave of Raleigh; his son George W. Sloan, Jr. and wife Judy of Wake Forest; daughter Rhina Moore and husband Harold of Raleigh; son Timothy Sloan of Holden Beach; sister Catherine Tonnesen of Brooklyn, NY; ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased in death by his son, Michael Alan Sloan.
Visitation is scheduled for 1:00pm-1:45pm at North Raleigh Chapel, 5421 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, on Thursday, December 12. Funeral services will be held immediately after visitation beginning at 2:00pm. Arrangements are by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Millbrook Road.
