Born in Warren County, NC, George was the son of the late George Robinson and Indie Patterson Robinson. From an early age, he learned the value of hard work on his family's tobacco farm in Norlina, NC in the summers and at the shipyards in Wilmington, NC in the winters. After graduating college and training with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, George proudly served in the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations during and after the Korean War. Soon after his honorable discharge, George launched what would become a 35-year career with the NC Department of Revenue serving as a field agent, assistant director and director of the Inheritance and Gift Tax Division until retiring in 1992. George continued his passion for public service in retirement as an assistant Sergeant at Arms for the NC House of Representatives and the NC Senate until 2011.
George’s devotion to his family, friends and Christian faith was equally strong. With his wife Mary Lee, George was a charter member of North Raleigh United Methodist Church. He served as its first administrative board chairman, participated in the men's groups, provided leadership on numerous church committees, and faithfully attended for more than 45 years. Friends and neighbors best knew George for his never-met-a-stranger hospitality and for sharing from his overflowing vegetable garden. His healthy addictions to Mary Lee’s sweet potato casserole and NC State Wolfpack sports were among his many enjoyments in life.
George will be forever loved and remembered by his wife of 65 years, Mary Lee; his children George B. “Robbie” Robinson, Jr. (wife Sandra) of Garner, NC; daughter Beverly R. Murray (husband Eugene) of Cary, NC; and grandchildren Andrew Robinson and Alan Robinson. George is preceded in death by his parents, sister, and brother-in-law.
