Born July 9, 1922 in Tarboro, NC, he was the youngest son of Junius Garrison and Georgianna Parker Newsome. He graduated from Tarboro High School as Valedictorian. Early in WWII, he joined the Navy and served in Naval Intelligence while stationed in Puerto Rico. Following the war he attended Duke University and graduated from Duke Law School in 1947.
This devoted husband married the love of his life, Loraine Edwards, on January 9, 1946. They made their home in Raleigh and raised two beloved children. A dedicated employee, he spent 39 years in Wachovia's Trust Department advising people on estate planning. Following retirement, he practiced law for 20 years.
His children, Deborah Loraine Newsome Smith and husband Witte of Winston-Salem, and George Hassell Newsome, Jr. and wife Noel of Monroe, were by his side at the end. His five grandchildren , Elissa Smith Fowler and husband Preston of Atlanta, Ashley Lauren Mullin and husband Ryan of Indianapolis, Ryan Madison Smith and wife Martha of Wilmington, Connor Dylan Newsome, and Logan George Newsome, both of Monroe called him PaPa. His two great grandchildren, Lola Jane Mullin and Madison Loraine Gale Fowler, were blessed to spend brief but cherished time with him.
His personal pursuits are unforgettable gifts to the family he treasured. He loved woodworking and built everything from home additions to beautiful furniture. Many local organizations benefited from his giving spirit and selfless attitude. He was a 45 year member of the Raleigh Civitan Club, and volunteered for many years with Meals on Wheels.
Faith played an important role in his life and he devoted more than 50 years to Ridge Road Baptist Church. He served as Trustee, was instrumental in building the Sanctuary, and held active roles in the Diaconate, Search, Budget and Stewardship committees.
Preceding him in death were his parents and eight siblings: Raleigh, Harry, Jay, Edward, and Raymond Newsome; and Carrie Gaither, Lucille Tyner, and Nell Denton. He is survived by his wife, sisters-in-law Mamie Gray Newsome and Mildred Armstrong, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be Monday, 1:00 at Ridge Road Baptist Church, Raleigh. Family will receive friends after the service. Private interment at Montlawn. Memorials suggested to the church, American Heart Association, or the Alzheimer's Association.
