George attended Belmont Abbey Preparatory School. George left school and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17. After basic training, George served as a military policeman in Italy after World War II. After receiving an honorable discharge George graduated with honors from Belmont Abbey. He graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 1952 with a B.S. in Business Administration. He was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, an honorary scholastic fraternity. He served as Chairman of the Men’s Honor Council and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. George graduated from Harvard Law School cum laude in 1955. While in law school, George worked with the Harvard Voluntary Defenders, a group of law students who helped defend indigent persons in the Massachusetts Courts.
George returned to Goldsboro to practice law. He practiced with W. Powell Bland and later with partners H. Jack Edwards and James A. Vinson III. He later practiced solo. After moving to Wilmington, NC, he practiced with the firms of Rountree and Seagle and Ward and Smith. Later he practiced with Poyner Spruill in Raleigh. He developed a general practice early and later focused on domestic law, civil litigation, arbitration and construction law. George practiced law for over 50 years. In addition to the practice of law, George had various business interests.
George was active in civic matters, including the Wayne Industrial Development Commission, Chairman of the United Fund, was a Jaycee, a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Elk’s Lodge. He served on the City of Goldsboro Board of Alderman.
George was devoted to his wife and children and enjoyed spending time with his family. George married Jane Lassiter of Raleigh in May 1952. George and Jane moved to Raleigh to be closer to their children in 2011. George is preceded in death by his eldest son George III. He is survived by his wife Jane Freeman, daughter Mary Gail Freeman and sons Thomas Raine Freeman and James Freeman (Cyndi Harvard).
A Memorial Mass will be held at St Francis of Assisi, 11401 Leesville Road, Raleigh at 12:30 PM, December 26th, 2020. A graveside interment will be held following at Montlawn Cemetery.
