Frank Steed, 86, of Raleigh, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, June 30, 2012. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Lauren Anne Foyle. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Helen A. Steed; daughters, Kim Wheeler and Leigh Bottenfield of Raleigh; his granddaughter, Lindsay Helena Rodgers of Raleigh; son-in-law, Doug Wheeler; brother, Charles Steed of Churchill, TN; sisters-in-law, Martha Pate of Asheboro and Nancy Nowlan of Raleigh; nieces, Lois Bagley or Asheboro, Ginger Pate of Winterville, Kathy Roddy of FL and Judy Shubert of Cary; nephews, Randy Steed of Churchill, TN, Tommy Pate of Winterville and Ras Bagley of Asheboro; and his aunts, Margaret Steed and Dorlos Steed of Asheboro.
Frank was born in Asheboro, NC on March 17, 1926. He served in the US Air Force during WWII as a gunner on a B29 with the 444th Bombardment group in the Pacific. He also served his country in the Korean War. He received an undergraduate degree from Elon University, Master’s degree from East Carolina University and took graduate courses at Duke University and UNC.
From 1955 to 1967, Frank taught Biology at Broughton High School in Raleigh. He was JV football coach, tennis coach and Senior Class Advisor to the Class of 1960. Beginning in 1968, Frank became the Principal at Mount Vernon Goodwin Elementary School in Raleigh, and later Principal at Northwoods Elementary in Cary. Frank worked for Wake County School System until his retirement in 1991.
Frank was a longtime member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. He was an avid hunter who enjoyed fishing, camping and hiking throughout his life with family and friends. His time as Troop Leader for the Boy Scouts at Westminster Presbyterian Church, and teaching and coaching, were some of his happiest years. He loved and honored his family and friends, and will be greatly missed. Never a stranger did he meet, nor an unkind word spoken.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 4801 Six Forks Road, Raleigh. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh.
The family will receive friends on Monday, July 2, 2012 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Road, Raleigh from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
The family would like to express their deep gratitude to their friends and family for all their love and support. Special thanks to Agatha, Juliah and Mary for their loving care of Frank during his illness and to the Hospice of Wake County Team for making the journey peaceful.
