Mr.Steed was one of my favorite teachers as well as being one of my favorite people.  We worked together when he was our class of '60 advisor and his warm, friendly and gentle character will never be forgotten.
I won't forget the time in Biology when Pat Lee and I were carrying a big lab container and dropped it.  Mr. Steed wasn't sure whether it was Pat or Alex Lee so made all three of us stay after school for weeks!  Of course it wasn't much of a punishment because we enjoyed being with him.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Frank Steed.  As administrators in the Wake County School System we worked together for many years.   He was a conscientious and caring person who always wanted what was best for his students.  My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

We knew Frank while he attended the Creedmoor Road Total Life Center. We are volunteers there; Ron reads the news and tells stories, and I play the piano. We will remember Frank as a kind, happy man with a big smile who was always ready to please. We will miss him.

i remember mr. steed as my biology teacher saying that athletes could go just so far on grit and determination, but to compete at the olympic level required special physical gifts; that was 55 years ago, and i still remember it!

Mr. Steed was loved and respected as an educator because he truly cared for the students in his classroom.  Condolesces to his family.  He will be missed by all who were touched by him.

Mr. Steed was my principal at Mt. Vernon 1970 - 1974. I was saddened to hear of his passing. He taught us that principal was spelled with 'pal'. RIP and godspeed!

Mr. Steed taught me so much more than I thought I was capable of accomplishing in 1961 -- cat dissection to understand muscles, etc, animal kingdom's detailed order, research reports, etc. He was so capable, passionate, funny, wise, and a great role model.  I remember his telling us to ignore hurtful peer criticism, because those who extended it actually didn't think highly of themselves, a powerful thought for teen years.  I can see him now standing by the window, holding the venetian blinds' cord with his hand behind his back, resting behind his belt.  Two physicians emerged from this particular class, and I'm sure his influence encouraged them onward in the sciences. Broughton provided a great education, but Mr. Steed was certainly my most oustanding one.  How fortunate we all were.  Janice Young Britson

I am very sorry to learn of Mr. Steed's death.  He was one of my favorite teachers at Broughton, but even more important to me was the impact that he had on me as the Advisor to our Explorer Unit in Scouting.  When I reached the rank of Life Scout, he continued to encourage me to earn my Eagle award and when I did, I am certain that he was as proud of the accomplishment as I was.  But he did not stop there and continued to keep me moving forward until I received the God and Country and Silver Explorer Awards, which was a unique achievement in Scouting and one that I would never have accomplished without Mr. Steed's leadership.  One of my favorite Scouting stories is about a camping trip that Mr. Steed set up at the last minute when we were passing through his Biology class one Friday.  He told us to just take breakfast food as we would catch our dinner.  We fished and fished that night but nary a fish got hooked.  By 10 o'clock, we had eaten all of the breakfast food and were grousing about what to do for breakfast the next morning.  Never at a loss for action, Mr. Steed pulled out the equipment and showed us how to gig frogs.  That next morning I learned that they do taste like chicken but even more, I learned to think outside the box, which is just one more reason that I am thankful that Mr. Steed was a part of my life.

Dear Helen & Kim, I'm very sad to hear of Frank's passing. When I was a young man in the Wake County Public School System, Frank took me under his wing, and not only taught me "the ropes" with WCPSS, but also many valuable life lessons as well. He was without a doubt one of the best men I ever worked with or had the pleasure to know. I still remember how much he loved his little beloved Lauren! I know for certain he rests in peace with his Savior, and Lauren is with him again. I'm sincerely grateful for the opportunity I was given to have known and worked with Frank Steed. Mr. Steed was the kind of teacher I tried to be as I taught my students.  Always positive and supportive of each student, he made science come alive for me and I still have a love of science that carried me in my elementary and middle school teaching.

As a teacher, Mr. Steed had a major impact on my life, first at Daniels, and then at Broughton.  I credit his enthusiasm and interest in science for awakening my nascent scientific abilities, which for me later morphed into computer science and robotics and which defined my own life.  I will always remember him fondly.

A teacher in every sense of the word. Our friend, our mentor, our other parent, Mr Steed's love and warmth infused everyone whose life he touched......and he touched all of us in those high school years. I have such fond memories of my Uncle Frank. My brother, Donnie and I spent hours in his basement playing with anything we could find. There was never a dull moment with Uncle Frank and he will be missed!

Mr Steed was a fine man indeed.  He taught me Driver's Ed as well as Biology.  Never will forget - got into Driver's Ed car - straight drive - I changed gears without pushing in clutch.  Mr Steed had to change cars and asked for automatic if he had to teach me to drive!!  Love that man and I can now drive a stick shift!

Thanks to Coach Steed, I can recognize most bugs and leaves, am familiar with the odor of formaldehyde from preserved cats, and - a bonus for having had him as my driver ed instructor- am pretty good at backing in a car since he made some of us back several blocks as punishment for giggling (while he hung out the window puffing on his cigar!).  I am also familiar with a number of Scientific American magazine articles from our Friday activities.  What a fine contribution he made in service to our country as well as being an admirable mentor for thousands  of young people.  Thanks to his family for sharing him with us.

Mr. Steed is one of the few teachers I still remember so well from my time at Broughton...he was always patient, kind, and a wonderful teacher. Just a great man and I know he'll be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Mr. Steed was one of the best teachers I ever had -- warm, funny, kind. He knew how to make the classroom a good place to be.  I have so many good memories of him -- from a year in his class at Daniels and another year at Broughton.

Mr. Steed had a positive impact on everyone who ever met him.  He was a great teacher and role model throughout his distinguished career.  He greeted everyone with a smile and a kind word.  My deepest sympathy to Mr. Steed's family.  Thank you for sharing him.
