Shields Pittman, 66, of Raleigh, died peacefully at home on July 14. Son of the late Frank S. Pittman, Sr. and Virginia Blackwell Pittman, he was a native of Scotland Neck. Shields is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Carolyn Langhorne Pittman, daughter Emily Funderburk and her husband, Pat, son Frank S. Pittman, III, and grandsons, who knew him as “Bubbles”, Patrick and Wells Funderburk, all of Raleigh. He is also survived by his sister, Fayetta Pittman Weaver and her husband, Wink, of Roanoke, VA, Carolyn’s parents Norvell and Alice Langhorne, and her siblings, Bruce Langhorne and his wife, Helen, and Janet Langhorne and her husband, Michael Murphy, all of Richmond, VA, and many adoring nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends whom he treasured.
Shields graduated from Scotland Neck High School and attended NCSU where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. Most of his career was as an outstanding Realtor in Raleigh, currently with Prudential York Simpson Underwood. He was a leader in his industry, serving as President of the Raleigh Regional Association of Realtors, Vice President of the NC Association of Realtors, and Dean of the Realtor Institute, and was proud to be recognized by his peers as the Raleigh Realtor of the Year and inducted in the Raleigh Realtors Hall of Fame.
A true Southern Gentleman, Shields was the life of the party, the first to help a friend, always quick with a joke, and the one who knew all of the verses to the songs. He was an undisputed barbeque aficionado, and an epicurean of all foods “mighty fine”.
Shields was forever devoted to his family and friends, as they were to him, especially in his final days. A memorial service will be held to honor him Tuesday, July 17 at 11a.m. at his church, White Memorial Presbyterian Church. There will be visitation with the family in the Jane Bell Gethering Space at White Memorial the evening before, 5-7p.m. Graveside service will be conducted in Scotland Neck, NC, in Baptist Cemetery on Tuesday, July 17 at 4:00p.m.
The family asks that memorial donations to the church be considered in lieu of flowers, White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Road, Raleigh, NC, 27608.
