Evelyn Gupton Harper, 95, of Raleigh, NC, passed away on March 24, 2021, of natural causes of living a long life. She was born February 12, 1926, in White Level, a rural community outside Louisburg, NC. She was graduated from Edward Best High School, and received a business diploma from a school in Henderson, NC. She worked as a bookkeeper, secretary, and finally and happily as a legal secretary at Norfolk Southern Railway, moving from Raleigh to Washington, DC to Roanoke, VA before retiring from Norfolk Southern and returning to Raleigh.
Evelyn was a lifelong, dedicated member of the Baptist Church. After retirement she was active in Raleigh’s Senior Club and during her life traveled with friends throughout the U.S. and in Europe.
Evelyn is survived by a son, Gregg Harper, of Raleigh, and a daughter, Victoria Harper of Lynchburg, VA, nephews Phil and Johnny Swaney of Raleigh; Niece Tammy (Mike) Calvello of Cary, NC; great niece Ashley (Eric) Manstedt, and their daughters Scarlett, Ava, and Eliza of Fuquay Varina, NC. She was predeceased in death by her father and mother, James Elias and Lucy Pearce Gupton of White Level, and sister, Relda Gupton Swaney Stutts and brother-in-law Warren Stutts of Raleigh.
The graveside service and celebration of her life will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, March 29, at Raleigh Memorial Park on Glenwood Ave, officiated by Rev. Chrissy Tatum Williamson of Greystone Baptist Church. Friends and family are invited to spend time at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on E. Millbrook Rd. between 11:00am and 12:00pm to reflect on Evelyn’s life. Flowers are welcome, but please consider a donation to the Senior Adult Ministry at Greystone Baptist Church in Raleigh or to a charity of your choice.
