Emily Jane Johnson, 91, died at Autumn Leaves Assisted Living in Crystal Lake, Illinois on August 31, 2018 after suffering from Dementia over the past few years. Emily was the daughter of Elijah and Adaina Maddrix. She was the youngest of three children and adored her older brothers James and Ralph.
Emily was born in Crisfield, Md but lived most of her early life in the Baltimore suburb of Arbutus, Md. After high school she attended a local business college and began work at Amoco Oil Company in Baltimore, Md where she met Roland Johnson and the two were married in June 1951. They had sons Keith and Craig while living in Baltimore and then moved to Arlington Heights, Illinois in 1961 to follow Roland’s career at Amoco. Emily was very active at the Christian Church. The family moved to Raleigh, NC in 1973 and lived in North Ridge. Emily lost her Roland in 2000 after 49 years of marriage. While in Raleigh, she was very active at St. Paul’s Christian Church until her move to Cary, Il in 2011.
Emily was a cat lover, having numerous cats over the years. Emily’s greatest joy was traveling. The family took extended road trip vacations every summer when the kids lived at home, seeing most of the United States over the years. After Roland retired the two travelled extensively both on land and on cruises. The couple visited much of Europe, the Scandinavian countries, the Caribbean, Tahiti, Alaska and Hawaii. Emily LOVED Hawaii and they visited multiple times. Above all, Emily was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Emily is survived by son Keith and his wife Linda Johnson from Cary, Il., son Craig and his wife Trish Johnson from Durham, NC, grandchildren Michael and Stacie Johnson from Cary, Il. and Christy Johnson from Durham, NC.
Visitation is planned for 1:30 on Sunday September 9th followed by a 3:00 funeral service at Mitchell Funeral Home located at 7209 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC.
