Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Francis Holland, 92, of Cary, NC, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 23, 2012, at Glenaire Retirement Community. Born July 25, 1919, in Waynesville, NC, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Leila Turner Francis.
A graduate of Waynesville High School, Elizabeth attended Women’s College where she received her degree in Home Economics. She worked in Rowan County as an extension agent and then as a home agent in Iredell County. After moving to Raleigh, she worked in the Raleigh Public Schools for a number of years as a dietitian. She was always a very active person. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and playing bridge. With her family she camped in a tent all over the US and loved to fish off the Carolina piers. She never missed one of her children’s events and was active in the West Raleigh Presbyterian Church. In her retirement years, she loved to travel, visiting over 24 different countries and 48 states. She also pursued her painting interests, and shared her work with friends and family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Locke Holland, her son, Locke Holland Jr., a grandchild, Kip Holland, and brothers Arthur and wife Rosalie, Hugh and wife Lucille, and Walter and first wife, Avie, and second wife, Emma. She is survived by brother Wade Francis and his wife Bennie of Waynesville, sister Barbara Gentry and her husband Jack of Walnut Cove, son Charles and wife Mary Ann of Raleigh, son Bruce and wife Bernadette of Leesburg, Va., daughter-in-law Cindy Dimmette of Charlotte, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Lib will be buried alongside her husband in Raleigh Memorial Park in services attended by family. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, February 29th at Glenaire in Cary at 2:00 pm with the Revs. Moffett Churn of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church and Meredith Bratcher of Glenaire Retirement Community officiating. Lib’s family would like to thank Glenaire and its entire staff for the competent and compassionate care provided for Lib since May of 1999.
