Our beloved wife and mother Elizabeth Vossenberg Dunbar passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, July 19, while visiting her Mom in Florida. Elizabeth loved all and was loved by all. She met her husband Dan during the first few weeks of college in 1970. It was love at first sight and they have been together ever since, married forty six years.
Elizabeth was a devoted nurturer and our family’s bright, guiding light. After raising her four children, she lovingly cared for her granddaughters Audrey Claire and Vivian Kate Johnson and was just introduced to her first grandson Beckett Hayes Dunbar. Elizabeth spent countless hours in her garden tenderly taking care of her many plantings and talking with her Boylan Heights neighbors. Everyone who knew her remembers her beautiful welcoming smile and generous outgoing nature. While many hearts are broken by this sudden loss, our Catholic faith confirms that Christ will bring healing to our lives and will light our way forward.
She was active in many organizations including the Living Faith Committee at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral, The Boylan Heights Garden Club, the Artwalk and the family business. She was the ever-gracious host, cultivating personal relationships with Airbnb guests in our home, Hotel Nicaragua. She was a Lady of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
Elizabeth was pre-deceased by her father, Dr. Frans J. Vossenberg. She is survived by her mother Anne H. Vossenberg, her husband Dan, her four children Bruce, Anne, Kemp, Andrew, her three grandchildren Audrey Claire, Vivian Kate, Beckett Hayes, and her siblings Andrea Grimes, Joanne Gillis, Frans Vossenberg and Peter Vossenberg.
A funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 200 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC on Friday July 26 at 2:00pm.
