Elbert Thomas House, Jr. of Raleigh, North Carolina passed away on Friday, April 11, 2025 at the age of 75. He was born on April 2, 1950 in Raleigh, North Carolina to the late Elbert Thomas House Sr. and Dorothy Frances House.
He worked as a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy during the Vietnam war, before returning to the US, and spent time working at the Springmoor Retirement Community, before finding his passion in funeral service. He was a licensed Funeral Director, working at Hudson Funeral Home in Durham for 14 years, and Walker’s Funeral Home in Chapel Hill for 5 years. He found great fulfillment in his service to the bereaved and being able to better his community.
His patriotism was a defining aspect of his sense of self. He was incredibly proud of his navy service throughout his life. He also found great joy in music. He was a self-taught guitarist, and enjoyed singing as well. He was a man with an incredible sense of humor, often described by those who knew him best as a jokester who never met a stranger. He held family values very close to his heart, as evidenced by his marriage to Susan House, his wife of nearly 41 years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Elbert Thomas House, Sr. and Dorothy Frances House.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Susan House; his daughter, Jennifer House Hartsfield (Greg Hartsfield); his grandchildren, Raymond Hartsfield, Nora Hartsfield, and Sadie Hartsfield; his sister, Judie Barbour (Craig Barbour); his brother-in-law, Gary Wood (Lou Martin); his niece, Rachel Barbour; and his nephew, Garrett Wood (MaKayla Wood).
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service in the Chapel at Mitchell Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at 2:00 PM. Visitation with the family will begin at 12:00 PM.
