A native of Johnston County, she was born to the late Walt and Daisy Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Smith. As a native of Raleigh, she was a dedicated employee of Wake Medical Center for 27 years. While employed, she obtained her college degree in business administration. She was a distinguished employee and served as president of the Employee Advisory Committee and received the “Order of the Owl” Award.
Effie was a friend to many and was blessed with an excellent voice. She enjoyed singing hymnals and later in life, she enjoyed dancing to beach music. Effie loved her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Mack Johnson, Jessie Dixon, Don Johnson, Jewel Higgins and Frank Johnson. Surviving brothers and sisters include: William "Mann" Johnson, Susie McLamb, Dan Johnson and Gladys Turner. Also surviving are her children, Ty and Christine Smith and Joan and Wally Courie.
She was a dedicated, proud mother who always placed the needs of others, especially her children, first. She was deeply loved by her children and they were truly blessed to have such a mom. She will forever remain in our hearts.
Her family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on 1701 East Millbrook Road, Raleigh NC on Thursday, February 23. 2012. Funeral Services will be at Brown Wynn at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 24, 2012. A short graveside service will be held following the funeral at Roselawn Cemetery in Benson, NC.
