Mrs. Edna Knight of Raleigh peacefully passed away Sunday morning March 6, 2011 at the age of 99. Mom to three boys and "Mammy" to three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, she celebrated her 99th birthday in January with much of her family in attendance.
Although a North Carolina native from Lewiston-Woodville, she spent most of her adult life in Raleigh caring for others and her family. She was valedictorian of her class, daughter of a Methodist minister farmer and a Breast Cancer Survivor. Strong in her work ethic and faith, she attended Edenton Street United Methodist Church, took great joy from tending her gardens, canning, sewing, composting and offering herself to the service of others. Edna was at heart a recycler and friend of the environment way before those terms arose.
Although she worked until retirement at Hudson-Belk in downtown Raleigh, she always found time to plant the seed of a giving spirit in others by donating her energy to Meals on Wheels and United Methodist Women at Edenton Street UMC. This seed blossomed in her Granddaughter Christy, over which Edna had great influence, who continues her charitable work. God gave Edna Knight an abundance of time and blessings which she utilized to the fullest. For all these things and more, we love her and she will be greatly missed.
She survived her loving husband of 62 years, James R. Knight, Sr., that passed away in 1995. She is survived by her sister, Lola Earley of Ahoskie, NC; her three sons and their families: son James R. Knight, Jr. and her granddaughter Christy Knight of Raleigh; her son Morris Knight and his wife Anna Knight of Richmond, VA, Grandson, Charles Knight and his wife Cathy Knight with great-grandchildren Caroline Knight and Cameron Knight all of Elon, NC; her son Stephen Knight and his wife Wanda Knight, Granddaughter, Tonya Tompkins and husband Chris Tompkins with great-grandson, Michael Tompkins all of Winston, GA.
The family will receive friends on Friday March 11, from 11:00 – 11:45 am at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave., the graveside service will follow at 12:00 noon at Briercreek Memorial Gardens.
