Eddy attended National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan where he received his degree in Mechanical Engineering. He moved to the U.S. in 1964 to continue his graduate studies. He obtained his Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University and his PhD in Aerospace Engineering from North Carolina State University.
Most of his professional career was spent in the University of North Carolina System, first as the Director of Computing at Fayetteville State University. He then moved to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to serve as the Director of the Administrative Computing Center. Under his leadership, Eddy designed a University Management Information System which significantly improved the computing capabilities of UNCG.
Eddy officially retired in 1996 as the Director of Information Systems Research and Development in UNCG's Division of Computing and Information Systems. This allowed him to focus more time on his consulting company educating business leaders on innovative technology solutions. Eddy was talking about cloud computing before anyone else knew what it was.
Eddy was a brilliant man with a great thirst for knowledge. He never went anywhere without taking a technology magazine with him to read and his steno notebook for note taking. (Those chairs in the mall stores were placed there just for him while the rest of the family shopped.) Eddy believed that hard work brought success so he put 110% into everything he did, both at work and at home.
After battling the effects of dementia and Parkinson’s for nearly ten years, he leaves behind his beloved wife of 54 years, Helen, whom he married in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1969. Together they had two children, Ivan (Jennie) Cheng of High Point, grandchildren Jonathan, Savannah and Griffyn; and Vivian (Jeff) Lin of Cary, NC, grandchildren Sydney and Avery.
The family will have a private memorial. We are thankful to everyone who has supported our family in so many ways during the last ten years. We are especially grateful to Juana Lopez, who has provided such supportive care to Eddy over the last five years, and to neighbors Harry and Pam Gibson for their compassion shown to Eddy and support provided to Helen. We are also thankful to Fo Guang Shan Temple, North Carolina - 北卡佛光山.
