Dorothy Freeman Perkinson Powell, 87, of Raleigh passed on Monday, July 23, 2012. Born on February 28, 1925, in Littleton, NC, the daughter of the late Jesse and Thelma Perkinson. Dorothy was a founding member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Raleigh, she was also an avid gardener and devoted friend to Josie, Ramona and Josephine, her hairdressers, Lisa and Debbie, her Sunday School Teacher, Alberta Scott, her devoted neighbors, The Stevenson’s and Tommy Atkinson, who took care of her lawn. Mrs. Powell was a commercial photography artist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Sanford Powell.
Surviving are: her son, Jeffrey L. Powell and his wife, Shannon A. of Raleigh.; two grandchildren, Sydney and Monica Powell of Raleigh; a brother, Gordon Perkinson and his wife, Caroline of Richmond, VA.; two sisters, Betsy Harris and her husband, Mickey of Colonial Heights, VA, Emma Perkinson of Warrenton.
The family would like to give special thanks to Ina Dell and Bruce Vaughn for their loving devotion and care of Dot. The family would also like to thank the doctors, nurses and too many others to mention, at Duke Raleigh, for their devotion and care of Dorothy.
The family will receive friends Wednesday 6-8:30 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Thursday at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2100 Noble Rd., Raleigh In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2100 Noble Rd, Raleigh, NC 27608.
