Doris Elizabeth Baumgartner Harney, 96, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her daughter’s home on Thursday, July 4, 2019. Born on April 4, 1923 in Loraine, Illinois; she was the daughter of the late Charles Otto Baumgartner and Nellie Rae Tucker Baumgartner, and wife of the late William Walter Harney.
Doris met her husband, Bill, in Bradford, Illinois. They lived in several places in the Midwest before settling in Peoria. While in Peoria she worked for Bergner’s and Illinois Central College in administrative assistant positions. She enjoyed travel and visited nearly every US state, along with several trips through Europe with family.
While in Peoria she volunteered at Lakeview Museum of Arts and Sciences and served as an election judge for many years. She also volunteered with Note in the Pocket while living in Raleigh. Doris enjoyed volunteering by knitting hats for infants, toddlers and cancer patients up until the time of her death. Doris loved fishing, playing Scrabble, reading, sewing, knitting, watching the Cardinals and Cubs play baseball, and watching professional tennis.
She is survived by her children: Linda (Bill) Jackson, Arizona; Steven Harney; John Robert (Suzanne) Harney, Florida; Richard (Betsy) Harney, Illinois; Martha (Allen) Hayes, North Carolina; Karen Harney, Illinois. She is also survived by five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and twelve nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother Charles Richard (Marietta) Baumgartner, and sister Ann (Al) Keim.
Family will receive friends at the home of Martha and Allen Hayes in Raleigh, NC on Wednesday, July 10th from 2:00-4:00 PM. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 10:30 am at Resurrection Mausoleum & Cemetery (7519 North Allen Road) in Peoria, Illinois.
