My wonderful Dad, Donald Arthur Lineberry, passed away on Saturday, Sept 10th. Born in Galax, Virginia on April 6, 1937, Don’s life was the epitome of the American dream. He graduated from Durham (NC) High School in 1955. He enlisted in the US Navy while still in high school and served five years in the Naval Active Reserves, stationed mainly in Virginia Beach. From there, he joined the Nello L. Teer Company, one of the largest construction companies in the world, where he worked for 40 years, rising from humble beginnings to the position of Vice President of the Company’s Quarry Division. During his time with Teer, Don traveled to Africa, to the nation of Malawi, assisting with the construction of an airport in that country’s capital city.
Don was a fan of NASCAR, particularly the driver Bill Elliott, but what he loved most, and spent most of this time on, was his family. He doted on his grandchildren, Jackson and Hayley, never missing birthday and holiday celebrations, and attending many of their baseball and soccer games, and other athletic events. My Dad was generous, supportive and kind, and always willing to help. We will miss him dearly.
Don was predeceased by his wife Rachel Marie. They were married for more than 55 years.
He is survived by his daughter, Dona Kaplan, and his son-in-law Harry Kaplan; grandchildren, Hayley and Jackson Kaplan; along with his sisters, Jean Smith and Carol Simmons and two nephews and two nieces.
There are no services planned at this time.
