Since early on, Don recognized the merit of hard work and earnestly sought improvement through different vocations. As a boy, he set pins in a bowling alley, delivered newspapers, harvested potatoes, and created a grocery home delivery program in and around the Oneonta community that was built in conjunction with his family's local grocery store.
Don spent time serving his country in the US National Guard where he completed his service as a draft sergeant. He went on to continue a career in sales with the Nestle Company and later completed his professional career as Director of the Foodland Enterprise, Utica, New York.
On October 1, 1955, Don married his love, Theresa DeBonzo and they later expanded their family to include a son, Donn, of Stevenson Ranch, California, and a daughter, Cindy, of Holly Springs, North Carolina. He is also survived by his son-in-law, Larry; granddaughter, Kristen (Angelo); great-grandchildren, Rocco and Luciana; grandson, Stephen; brother-in-law, David; sister-in-law, Donna; and two special nephews, Jeff and Keef. Don enjoyed a special relationship with his father-in-law, Anthony (Red) DeBonzo until his passing in 1973.
Throughout his life, Don developed many interests. He was a true blue fan of the New York Yankees and of the Syracuse Orangemen Basketball Team. He enjoyed music and over time created a sizable collection. He particularly appreciated jazz and old-time country and western. He shared his love and knowledge of music with his family, and especially with his grandchildren.
Don was a devoted husband and father. He received joy by creating happiness for them. He worked tirelessly tending to his yard and pool. He did the same for family camping trips, whether it was pitching a tent or outfitting a 36 foot camper in the Adirondack Mountains. He loved a good game of horseshoes, croquet competitions, and Monopoly marathons with his grandson. He lovingly attended countless dance recitals for his granddaughter. Don loved to decorate for Christmas and each year hand-picked new and unique decorations to display for his family.
Don loved when his family gathered together and took great pride in the feasts that were prepared by his wife. He was always found working alongside her in the kitchen, particularly at the sink where he helped with the pots and pans.
In retirement, Don and Theresa donated their time an talents to the local community and to their church. Don's faith in God, integrity, and moral character are a great legacy left to his family and loved ones.
