David Lee Westmoreland, CSM U.S. Army (Retired), 68, of New Hill, North Carolina, died Saturday, June 30, 2012 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. David was born in Mt. Airy, NC to the late Lawrence and Ethel Westmoreland. He was a retired Command Sergeant Major with the U.S. Army for 35 years, including a tour in Desert-Storm. He was also retired from the Environmental Protection Agency. David had a great love of the outdoors, and hunting with his grandsons.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Polly Westmoreland.
Surviving are his wife, Cynthia Kelly Westmoreland; his two daughters, Kelli Westmoreland and Kim Westmoreland Ayscue; three grandsons, Vince and Spencer Ayscue, and Harley Ottoway; two brothers, Alan Westmoreland and wife Becky, and Sonny Westmoreland; niece, Sharon Johnson and husband Richard; and nephews Michael and Mark Westmoreland.
A visitation will be held Monday, July 2nd between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave. Raleigh. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 3rd at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home. Entombment with full military honors will follow the service at Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum.
