David was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 24, 1953. He graduated from N.C. State University in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in Physics.
He was a published writer, artist, musician, and avid cook. He enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Recently, he had become involved in the Wilson Active Artists Association.
David had a long career as a technical writer and software developer for various companies in the Raleigh area.
Surviving family includes his son, John Thaddeus Kelly of Raleigh; his mother, Helen Kelly of Durham; his fiancé, Jan Stephens of Raleigh; a brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Judy Kelly of Raleigh; and a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Gary Faltinowski of Youngsville; a brother-in-law, David Hales of Kenly; his close friend, Tom Braswell of Wilson; and his former wife and mother of his son, Anne Christy of Raleigh.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Edward Kelly; and a sister, Susan Kelly Hales.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 17 at eleven o’clock in the morning at Christ Church in the chapel, 120 East Edenton Street in Raleigh with a reception to follow. A private interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tammy Lynn Center, 739 Chappell Dr, Raleigh, NC 27606, in memory of David.
Brown-Wynne, 300 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh, is serving the Kelly family.
