Born on September 20, 1944, to John and Mary Ann Hothersall, a family of greengrocers in Preston, England, Christine was always proud of her Plungington Road and Lancashire roots. She stayed that same genuine person throughout her entire life, with solid values instilled by Jack and Molly.
Experiencing her father's death at age 11 was a loss she always carried with her, and it also blessed her with a compassion that she readily shared with those going through difficult times.
She was easily able to connect with people, and cherished those moments, whether it was chatting to everyone at her local Food Lion, or hosting a dinner at her house. She simply cared and was kind to others.
Her early loss also gave her a deep wish to create her own family, and she did so with Allan Thurston Bury, the love of her life, when they married in 1972, and welcomed daughter Claire Louise in 1977.
An adventurous undercurrent ran through Christine's life, from making the big move to London in the Swinging Sixties and starting her career in hospitality, taking another job in Jersey, one of the Channel Islands, and then her move across the pond to North Carolina at age 70! There she experienced her biggest adventure yet, being grandma to Eleanor Christine and Hannah Allan, and being a part of their everyday lives. The family is so grateful to have those almost nine years with mum and grandma just a mile away.
Christine is preceded in death by husband, Allan, and brother, Alan. She is survived by daughter, Claire, and beloved son-in-law, Peter, who embraced Christine in his life in such a kind way. Christine is also survived by best friend, Pat Rogers Robertson, whom she knew since the age of five.
The family would like to thank the ambulance and medical staff at UNC-Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC, particularly those in the E.R., Patient Towers Fourth Floor East, and the ICU. They would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to all friends and family near and far, particularly Nicola and Russell Millner and Tara Cleary-Aristizabal for their support during Christine's final days.
Children and animals were Christine's biggest loves, so we encourage donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in her memory.
A celebration of life for Christine will be held Wednesday, April 10, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Sacred Heart Church, 200 Hillsborough St, Raleigh, NC 27603.
Everyone is invited to join the family afterwards, 4:30-6 p.m., at Hibernian North, 8021 Falls of Neuse Road, to continue the celebration of Christine.
