Charlotte, known to many as “Mama Kirby,” was born in Columbus, GA, on August 20, 1943. Her life was characterized by a love of the US military, with her father, brother, and husband serving as career Army officers. She was fiercely devoted to her friends and family. She grew up all over the world, living, studying, and traveling in Asia, Europe, and the United States. She and her husband settled initially in Oklahoma City, OK, then raised their daughters in Pittsburgh, PA, and Raleigh, NC. She called Raleigh home for the last 31 years. Despite her worldly upbringing, there was no denying her southern roots. She was the epitome of southern charm, grace, and hospitality, and to meet her was to instantly fall in love with her. She had a picture-perfect memory and was a vivacious storyteller. In retirement, she enjoyed traveling to her beloved beach house in Cherry Grove, SC, or worldwide to visit her daughter and grandchildren. She was a rabid fan of the Army football team and was pleased to see them beat Navy this past season one last time.
She was preceded in death by her parents, COL Edwin Cummings, USA and Charlotte Storey Cummings; her brother, MAJ Frederick Cummings, USA; and her husband of 53 years, CAPT Curtis Melvin Kirby, USA. She is survived by her daughters Charlotte Koltick (Scott) and Courtney Kirby and four grandchildren: Hannah Koltick, Thomas Koltick, Jacob Koltick, and Isabella Koltick.
A funeral service was held on Sunday, January 29, in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home. She will later be buried in Arlington National Cemetery with her husband and her parents.
