Charlotte McWilliams Johnson, 77, passed away at her home in Chapel Hill, NC on May 6, 2021. She was born in Covina, California on July 19, 1943, daughter of the late Francis D. McWilliams and Charlotte Gordon McWilliams. Charlotte was predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years, M. Ross Johnson, PhD.
Charlotte was raised in southern California. Her grandmother, Ethel, lovingly referred to her as “my petunia”. This was later shortened to “Tunie” which she was affectionately referred as by all her family. As a young child, she was raised around horses which prompted her love for animals. She had many cats and dogs during her life. She even had an “adopted” Tiger, which she supported at a local rescue in North Carolina.
Nothing exemplifies Charlotte’s giving spirit more than the service she gave to the Child and Family agency of Southeastern Connecticut. Overtime, she cared for 60 baby boys and girls (one at a time) in her home as they waited for adoption. She later continued her acts of service in the local P.E.O group, providing scholarships to young women here in North Carolina.
Charlotte is survived by her sons, Michael and Greg; their wives Andie and Teresa; brother John and wife Linda; nephew Brian; brother Frank and wife Alice; nephew Francis and niece Tizzy. She has six amazing and wonderful grandchildren – Mack, Macy Lee, Sophia, Becca, Lottie and Ella Cate.
A memorial service is being planned for August in the Chapel Hill area. Details will be forthcoming as restrictions are being lifted.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made the Child and Family Agency of Southeastern CT. 255 Hempstead St. New London, CT 06320, or a charity of your choice.
