Charles Edward “Gus” Gustafson passed away February 11, 2013 peacefully at his home in Raleigh. Born December 18, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan to Oscar Clint and Allean Heymann Gustafson, Gus was raised on a farm in Hunts Corner, Ohio. In 1943 he graduated from Monroeville High School and immediately entered the United States Army. One year after graduation he landed at Omaha Beach on the second day of the Normandy D Day Invasion and the WWII Allied Liberation of Europe.
Upon his Honorable Discharge in 1945, he enrolled at Toledo University graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. After graduation he was hired by Carolina Power & Light Company (now Duke Energy) in Raleigh as a Substation Cadet Engineer retiring 38 years later as Manager Substation Maintenance & Construction. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of North Carolina and a member of the North Carolina Society of Registered Professional Engineers.
Gus was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for 60 years serving in many roles. In 1953 he started Boy Scout Troop 311 at Holy Trinity and served as Scoutmaster for many years. In 1978 he received the Lutheran Church Lamb Award in recognition for his work in scouting.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his stepmother Helen Sturm; sister, Janet Sabin, Tavernier, Florida; brothers, Raymond, Atlanta, Georgia, Donald, West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, Richard, Dunnellon, Florida; and step brother William Rice, Brainard, Minnesota.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen Behrens Gustafson; step brother, Richard Rice, Serra Vista, Arizona; sons, Dean Edward (Gail) Gustafson, Huntsville, Alabama, Neil Charles (Sharon) Gustafson, and Kent Allen (Colleen) Gustafson of Raleigh; 6 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, February 15, 2013, at 2:00PM at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2723 Clark Ave., Raleigh, NC 27607. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.
