Carolyn Sue Ugran Solomon died August 22, 2021, in Raleigh, NC at age 79. Carolyn was born on June 5, 1942, in Youngstown, Ohio. With recent roots in Slovakia and Romania, her parents, Susan and Peter Ugran, provided the drive and resources for Carolyn to live a rich life, thrive and give back in multiple domains.
Carolyn earned her undergraduate degree in Speech Pathology at Kent State University and a Master of Product Design from the College of Design at NC State University. Her formal education was enhanced by a broad introduction to multiple cultures through her travels including Ghana, Peru, Ecuador, Yucatan, China, Japan, England and Europe.
Carolyn is survived by her husband of over 50 years Daniel Solomon; children Brent Solomon and wife Sandra, Sara Stanley and husband Robert, and Kimberly Solomon; and four grandchildren Kyle Solomon, Rachel Hart, Madeline Solomon and Drew Dettelbach. Also surviving are her sister Marsha Ugran Glod, nephew Aaron Ugran, and his daughters, Kayleigh and Gretchen.
Besides her family, Carolyn’s passion was for design, one she enriched through her travels and expressed in her surroundings and in her creations across multiple media. Legacies of her travels remain in a rich collection of representative art and crafts. Over the years, Carolyn mastered spinning and weaving, needlecraft and other fiber arts, pottery, painting and silk screen, three dimensional constructions, and clothing and costume making for her children. Her skills extended to other art forms including garden design, dance and fitness, and her passions included classical music, ballet, and historic preservation.
Carolyn used her skills in a range of volunteer work, including raising funds to provide fresh water sources to families living along the Peruvian Amazon. At home, she played a key role in the non-profit that saved and restored Yates Mill, built in the 1750s and now the centerpiece of Historic Yates Mill County Park.
The family extends its gratitude to the many who have long offered support and comfort, especially Laura Mufaro, who was graciously by Carolyn’s side almost daily for 2 years.
A private service will be held for family.
