Mr. Hurley was born in Bristol, VA on September 5, 1927 in a large and loving family of ten children. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Merchant Marine and trained at the Merchant Marine Academy at Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY. After one year of service, he was drafted into the US Army and served in Germany as a member of the Army of Occupation. During this time, he managed the division message and mail center where he was trained in the use of the Enigma code system.
He was a graduate of Bristol’s Virginia High School, the Baltimore Institute of Photography, the five year Tool and Die Apprentice program sponsored by the State of Virginia, and he attended NC State University.
Mr. Hurley moved to Raleigh in 1954 where he was employed by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Meter Plant, which was then under construction. He retired in 1992 after 38 years of service working in various management and non-management positions.
Mr. Hurley was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ruth, and he is survived by two sons, Dr. Greg Hurley of Winterville, NC and Mr. Phil Hurley of Raleigh, NC. After Ruth’s death, Carl met a wonderful lady named Beulah Minor who became his constant companion and brought much love and happiness into his life once again. He is also survived by Sue White, a special niece from Bristol, VA.
He was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh where he served as an Elder, Deacon, and Stephen Minister; and he was a tenor soloist in the Chancel Choir where he served for 58 years. He was awarded the title of Elder Emeritus.
Mr. Hurley was also awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor Jim Martin in recognition of his years of volunteer work in the community and the State of NC. This is the highest award given to a citizen of North Carolina by the governor.
Special thanks to his doctors, to Rex Healthcare, and to the many friends who brought food, sent cards, called and visited Carl over the period of his illness.
Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 2:00 on Monday, Jan. 11, followed by burial at Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home at 300 St. Mary’s Street between 6 and 8 pm on Sunday, January 10.
