Billy Wells England, Sr, 81, of Raleigh, died Saturday morning, October 5, 2013. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, October 9th at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home with visitation following the service. A private interment will be held at a later date.
Born in Asheville, raised in Morganton, N.C, Bill had a lifelong love of the mountains. He was the son of the late Joseph C. and Roberta Wells England. He was a graduate of Morganton High School, Catawba College and did graduate work at the University of South Carolina. At Catawba, he earned All-State and All American honors in football. He was inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.
Following college, Bill played semi-professional football in the United States Army. Later, he was an assistant coach at the University of South Carolina and held head coaching positions at Walter Williams High School (Burlington) and Lee Edwards High School (Asheville). Bill left football, and changed careers to begin a successful twenty-seven year career at Prentice Hall Publishing Company where he won numerous sales awards including the Eagle Award multiple times, the highest honor in sales at Prentice Hall. He was especially proud of the awards given to him by the NC Science Teachers Association and the NC Social Studies Teachers Association. Bill was a member of Millbrook United Methodist Church.
Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Edna Kluttz of Salisbury, NC and his children, Deborah C. England of Raleigh, Rebecca L. England of Moseley, Virginia, and Jeffrey England and wife Lisa of Winston Salem, NC. He is also survived by the grandchildren he loved so much, Collin P. Cook, Sarah E. May and her husband, Justin, William W. Cook, Ashley R. Miller and her husband Matt, and Benjamin Skipper.
He was preceded in death by his son, Billy Wells England, Jr., his parents and his brothers J.C., Norman and Glenn.
The family would like to thank the wonderful doctors and nurses at Duke Raleigh Hospital, particularly those in Progressive Care and ICU, for the excellent care and compassion they gave both Bill and his family during the last four weeks.
