Betty Louise Smith

Betty L. Smith, 84, of Raleigh, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Oaks of Mayview. She was the only child of Marie Hayes Smith and Frank Taylor Smith. She grew up in the Hayes Barton area of Raleigh and attended Needham Broughton High School and she graduated from Peace College in 1951. Betty was a lifetime member of Westminister Presbyterian Church and is survived by a number of cousins, special friends and care giver.

She began her 42 year career with Wachovia Bank in 1951 in the Audit Department. After five years, she transferred to Retail Banking where she worked as a teller for ten years. Betty then served as a teller trainer before moving to a Customer Service Representative position. After two years she advanced to a Branch Operation Manager at the North Hills Office. In 1971 she joined the Hayes Barton team as Branch Manager. She retired from Hayes Barton as one of the bank’s first female Vice Presidents.

Betty loved being at her beach home in Pine Knoll Shores and fishing with her parents and friends and working in her yard here in Raleigh. She also loved to travel and took many cruises and trips with friends.

She touched the lives of many people and truly enjoyed her career of 42 years in banking. Her devotion to her works, staff and customers was impeccable.

Her vivacious personality, generosity and kindness caused her to never meet a stranger, or if she did; they soon became a friend and/or a customer of Wachovia.

She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, August 16, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary’s Street Raleigh. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm, prior to the service in the funeral home.
