Betty was born on February 28, 1932 in Mebane, NC. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Frank and Myrtle Ball Carden.
Betty married the love of her life, Milton Rountree on December 24, 1951; they were married for 60 years.
Through the years, Betty worked as a bank teller and did office work, but her passion was found in education. She worked at St. James United Methodist Church Kindergarten, St. Timothy’s Episcopal School, and Fox Road Elementary. She was viewed as caring and nurturing and was loved by many of the children she worked with.
Betty was a charter member of St. James United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and taught and directed Vacation Bible School. She was a lifetime member in St. James United Methodist Women and served as the first president. Betty was a member of 286 Rolesville Chapter Order of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron.
Betty and Milton enjoyed travel and visited all fifty US states, Canada, and Europe. Family get-togethers for holidays, birthdays, trips to the beach, the mountains, and at their vacation place at Kerr Lake were always special. Time spent with her grandchildren always made her happy and she was excited to be a Gigi to her great-granddaughter. Betty enjoyed eating ice cream, reading, working crossword puzzles, and playing canasta. She loved to laugh and rarely failed to find the humor in a good joke or a funny story.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Nancy Bailey (John), of Oak Island, NC and Denise Bray of Chesnee, SC; grandchildren, Chris Owens (Dominika Rogala) of Austin, TX and Michelle Roberts (Matt) of Charlotte, NC; great-grandchild Claire Roberts; numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Betty was predeceased by her husband, Milton, her sisters, Allene Rich and Ruth Phelps, and her brother, Al Browning.
Family will receive friends on Friday, January 5th, from 12pm- 1pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 East Millbrook Road, Raleigh, NC 27609. A celebration of life will be held following visitation at 1pm. The Reverend Lori Higgins, Chaplain of Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community will be officiating. A private interment will follow the service.
The family expresses great appreciation to the dedicated staff at Springmoor for the care and support provided during the fourteen years of her residence.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Betty’s memory to St. James United Methodist Church, 3808 St. James Church Road, Raleigh, NC 27604 or Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community Endowment Fund, 1500 Sawmill Road, Raleigh, NC, 27615.
