Betty King (Bass) Johnson, 67, passed away in her home on Friday evening May 6th. She had been valiantly battling brain cancer for 22 months. She was preceded in death by her father, Mack H King Jr. of Charlotte, NC. Born in Charlotte, raised in High Point, NC; she attended Meredith College and received a Masters Degree from N.C. State University. Betty was a Special Education teacher for Raleigh and Wake County Schools for nearly 34 years. While at Meredith, she was a founding member of the singing troupe named The Bathtub Ring. As a youth, Betty was an active Girl Scout and recipient of the Gold award.
Her passion for Scouting continued as a loving Scouters wife of 47 years to Jim and together they raised two Eagle Scout sons. Betty’s faith was developed by being an original member of the Seekers Sunday School class at Highland United Methodist Church. She had a passion for literature and loved to write. After retirement, she was an active member of the Pine Knoll Shores community and enjoyed volunteering on several municipal committees.
She was very passionate about the coast and enjoyed her time with friends & family in Carteret County. She is survived by her loving husband Jim of Raleigh and Pine Knoll Shores, her mother Evelyn P. King of Charlotte, her brother Dr. Mack H. King III of Mooresville, her sons Clark and wife, Shannon, of Morehead City; and Clay and wife Stacey, of Oak Ridge, along with 5 loving grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all those involved with her care, especially her caregivers Christine, Casey, Vanessa, Jean, Tyisha, Samantha, and Aloha, as well as the respective staff of the UNC Neuro-Oncology team and the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center of Duke Hospital. Additionally, the family sends their deepest gratitude to Reverend Harold Salmon for being a shining light and source of comfort to us all. Finally, there are no words that can convey our gratitude to and for Betty's good buddy Ellen; without you we would have been lost.
A visitation service will be held on Tuesday, May 10th from 6:00-8:00 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home located at 7209 Glenwood Ave. Raleigh, NC 27612. There will be a private graveside service Wednesday May the 11th and a Memorial Service to be held at Highland UMC on May 21st at 1:00 pm.
