

Betty was born on January 24, 1929 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of the late Thelma Holland and Herman Albert Derr. She was predeceased by her husband of five years, James Walter Hathaway who was killed in action in the Korean Conflict. She later married Herbert Raymond Madry Jr. They were married for 56 years. Ray Madry, M.D. predeceased her, having passed away on May 9th of this year.
She attended Classen High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Baptist University and Central. State University of Oklahoma.
Betty had many interests. She was a master quilt maker with over 40 hand stitched quilts. She had a deep and abiding love of history and genealogy having served as Regent and other board and leadership positions of The Samuel Johnston Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Among other organizations to which Betty devoted volunteer time were the Red Cross, Lutheran Family Refugee Program, and Wake Medical Center. Her duties included working with twenty to forty abused children on a weekly basis. She served as a board member of the Method Day Care Center, the North Carolina State Capitol Foundation, North Carolina Medical Alliance, Capitol Area Preservation, the Huguenot Society, and Raleigh Fine Arts Society.
She served as the State Chair for the Emergency Relief Fund for medical students and their families. She also served as the editor of the North Carolina Medical Society Alliance magazine, The Tar Heel Tandem, which received numerous awards during her tenure. Of particular note is that she served as a volunteer for Mordecai Historic Park and for the North Carolina Symphony for thirty years. Her husband endowed the symphony's Betty Ellen Madry Assistant Principal Viola Chair in her honor.
Betty is survived by her sons, Randall Hayden Hathaway Madry and wife, Stagg Sanders, of Raleigh, and Scott Lynndon Hathaway Madry, and wife, Sarah Brandes, of Chapel Hill; and by grandchildren Caroline Virginia Elizabeth Madry Alexander and husband, Douglas, Randall Hayden Hathaway Madry Jr., and wife, Sarah Walston, and Adrienne Ellen Dickerson Madry. She is also survived by her great grandchild, Charles Raymond William Alexander. Betty was blessed with many kind relatives, including her late husband’s sister, Isabel Madry Zimmerman, Isabel’s husband, Jay, and their family.
Many people cared for Betty and the family would especially like to thank cousins Alexandra McMillan Mordecai, and her husband, Samuel, and Amanda McMillan Mitterling, and her husband, John, for their enduring friendship and care. The family would also like to thank the staff of Whitaker Glen who consistently responded so well to our mother’s needs.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Road, Raleigh, NC on Friday, June 10, 2016, following a private interment service at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service in the Jane Bell Gathering Space at White Memorial.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the North Carolina Symphony, 2 E. South Street, Raleigh, NC 27601.
