Andy Brown died peacefully the evening of Friday, October 14, in the presence of family and friends at Wake Medical Center following complications from a head injury.
Andy was born on February 18, 1942 to Theodore Cecil and Lucy Bolin Brown in Raleigh, NC. Andy graduated from Atlantic Christian (Barton) College and received a D.D.S. degree from the Medical College of Virginia.
While serving in the U.S. Air Force at Tachikawa, Japan, he met his wife, Karlene Kay Shreffler. They were married in London and moved to Raleigh where they raised their three children and Andy enjoyed his life work as a general dentist in Cary for over 30 years.
In addition to looking after his patients and friends, Andy became active in the North Carolina Dental Society where he served as editor of the NC Dental Gazette for many years and was president of the society for one term.
Andy enjoyed fishing, sailing, gardening, and woodworking until his health diminished. He was a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor who fought an extended battle with grace and dignity and his unwavering resolve was inspirational.
Andy was preceeded in death by his parents and brother, Theodore C. “Ted” Brown, Jr., Esq.
Andy is survived by his wife of 41 years, Karlene Shreffler Brown; his son, Bernard Andrew “Bernie” Brown II (Susan) of Greensboro; his daughters, Claudia Ann Brown, of Raleigh, and Cynthia Kay “Cindy” Spear (Richard) of Cape Carteret; and his two wonderful granddaughters, Savannah Kay and Addison Lacey Spear. He will be missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at Macedonia United Methodist Church, Cary, NC on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 2:00 PM, with visitation following.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Macedonia United Methodist Church.
