Barbara Carter Barbour, 90, died peacefully at home with family. Barbara Jean Carter was born on August 11, 1933 to Alma Huggins and Neal Andrew Carter in Dillon, South Carolina. She graduated from Dillon High School in 1951 and shortly thereafter went to work with Southern Bell Telephone in Dillon.
After the Bell strike a few years later, Barbara moved to Laurinburg, NC where she continued to work for Southern Bell and met her first husband Roy Glenn Capps Jr. A move with her husband’s employment brought Barbara to Raleigh. Barbara was employed with N.C. State University Soil Science and later with the University Department of Food Science where she was a research technician. In 1970, Barbara married Dewey Ray Barbour. Barbara retired from N.C. State in 1992 and traveled extensively in the US and abroad. She was also an avid reader.
Barbara Jean was not an easy name to pronounce for little sister Polly. She became just “Bob” and Aunt Bob to her siblings’ children and grandchildren who loved her dearly and she loved them! Barbara was strong willed and determined which helped her overcome many obstacles in her life. She was loving and giving and cherished her family and friends.
Barbara was predeceased by her parents, her young son Trey, his father Roy, her second husband Dewey, and her siblings Joyce Shackelford, Linda C. Scott, and Jack Huggins Carter. She is survived by her loving daughter Robin Bliss Capps of Raleigh, her sisters Polly Carter Cochrane of Raleigh and Alma Carter Watson of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. A special thanks to her niece Elizabeth Cochrane who was instrumental in her care for the past several years and much gratitude to Debbie Neal Reep.
