Dr. Baljit Singh Gill, 86, passed away at home in Durham, North Carolina on March 24, 2018. He was born in Abohor, Punjab on May 23, 1931 to Arjun Singh Gill and Jaswant Kaur (Brar) Gill. He is preceded in death by his two brothers Narinder Singh Gill and Balraj Singh Gill. Dr. Gill held a Ph.D in Plant Breeding and Genetics from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska. He also held a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Agriculture from Punjab Agricultural University.
He held various positions including leading the Agriculture Department at Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana, Punjab and as a senior scientist for the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations working in South America. He also worked at the University of Sierra Leone, the University of Tanzania and Guelph university in Ontario, Canada. While in Durham he worked for Environmental Health and Research Testing.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Kailash Kaur Gill, his son Jag Gill and daughter-in-law Merna Gill of Charlotte, North Carolina, his son Nav Gill and daughter-in-law Laura Gill of El Dorado Hills, California. He is also survived by his grandchildren Alex Gill, Andrea Gill, Marshall Gill, Patty Gill and Corinne Gill and a great-granddaughter Lily Gill.
