Arthur L. Howard, Jr lost his 5 year battle with lung and heart disease on February 12th. A depression era child who appreciated the small things, he was a lover of long walks, nature, and the possibilities of observation. He loved hard work and the peace that came from it. All creatures were his friend, no animal was stray. He raised, cared for and cherished all.
As a graduate of Fred A Olds, Broughton High School, and N C State University, he valued education, yet preferred learning in a different way. Experiences, visuals and stories were his education. He never met a stranger and filled everyone’s life with smiles and comical banter. He was an analog man who believed in face to face communication and laughed at the new devices meant to keep us close. Arthur was an Eagle Scout, Scoutmaster for Troop 207 and a Sea Scout leader. He believed in the possibilities of all youth and loved to introduce them new ideas and adventures, particularly in the outdoors. Arthur was a proud Air Force Veteran and recalled his fellow airmen often. As the son of highway engineer, he lived all over North Carolina and fondly reminisced of stickball games on Fayetteville Street in Raleigh before the blacktop arrived.
He was the only son of Arthur L Howard, Sr and Edna Fulton Howard. He is survived by his life partner Barbara Cox Howard and son Art Howard.
The family will honor Arthur with a private ceremony. You can celebrate his life by taking a child outside and embrace the natural beauty around you.
Donations honoring Arthur Howard, Jr may be made to the Wake County SPCA or The Nature Conservancy.
