Anne Badger Smith Winborne

Anne Badger Smith Winborne died unexpectantly at her beach home in Emerald Isle, NC on May 22, 2011. Anne Badger was born Oct. 2, 1929 in Raleigh; she was the daughter of the late Judge and Mrs. Paul F. Smith. She was educated at Ravenscroft School, St. Margaret's School in Tappahannock, VA, Saint Mary's School, and attended NC State School of Design.

She was married to the late Vaughan S. Winborne, and is survived by her two children, Vaughan S. Winborne, Jr., his wife Lisa S. Winborne of Waimea, Hawaii; and Paul Faison S. Winborne, his wife Jane D. Winborne. She also is survived by her four grandchildren, Marit Abbe Winborne of Waimea, HI, and Lillian Frances Winborne, Sarah Perryman Winborne, and Paul Faison Smith Winborne Jr. of Raleigh.

She was presented at the North Carolina Debutante Ball in 1948; she was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames, past member of the Junior League of Raleigh, member of Christ Church, Carolina Country Club.

Anne Badger enjoyed her family and friends all of her life, making new friends at each stage. An avid cross word puzzle solver, she also enjoyed the current events and issues debated around the home. Other interests included armchair archeology, history local and state, and genealogy.

After her late husband's retirement her main interest was spending time at her beach home in Emerald Isle, enjoying the sun, ocean and fresh air. Even with her health declining and limiting her mobility, she insisted on independently living both at home and the beach. It was fitting that she died there.

The family will have a visitation from 6pm to 8pm, on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street in Raleigh. The funeral will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 East Edenton St. at 11am on Thursday, June 2, 2011, interment to follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
