Ann was born October 10, 1930 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, the daughter of John and Lois Adams. She has one brother John Quincy Adams. Ann spent many years in Boston, where she graduated from Tufts University with a degree in Occupational Therapy and also where she met and fell in love with Carl Lee Bumgardner. Ann and Carl were married on October 13, 1956. After seven years in Huntsville AL, Ann and Carl raised their five boys in Raleigh, NC where she was an active swim and tennis team mom, member of NC State University Faculty Wives Association, and member of the Laurel Hills Garden Club. Additionally, she was a devoted member of her Church, a life-long bridge player, a gifted gardener and talented in arts and crafts. At age 65 she found her life’s passion at the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle where she volunteered for over 18 years and received several awards including the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award. The News and Observer once wrote an Acts of Faith article about Ann where she was quoted as saying ”The Lord, somehow, he gets food to us, and we get it to those who need it”. Above all, Ann was happiest at home surrounded by family.
She is survived by her loving and supportive husband of 58 years, Dr. Carl Bumgardner; four sons, Carl (Tammie) Bumgardner, Erich Bumgardner, Joel Bumgardner (Michael Bevis) and Malcolm (Chrissie) Bumgardner; and seven grandchildren, Rachel (Willie) Keith, Christopher (Sarah) Bumgardner, Sarah (Josh) Snotherly, Heather (Nathan) Gordon, Emily Bumgardner, Rhen Bumgardner and Alex Bumgardner; two great grandchildren, Christopher Paul Bumgardner and John Michael Gordon. She is predeceased by one of her sons, Nathan Kurt Bumgardner.
Ann will always be remembered for her kind heart, commitment to those in need and her direct and spirited manner. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends, and from all of those in the community whom she selflessly served.
The funeral service will be held at Church of the Nativity, 8849 Ray Road at 3pm Sunday December 28, 2014. A reception at the church will follow the service.
