Andrew Brian Mayer passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 11, 2019 at his home in Durham, NC. Andrew was born on June 14, 1986 at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, NC to Dr. Theodore F. Mayer and Lisa Diane Mayer, but spent most of his life in Raleigh.
Andrew was warm and caring, a true humanitarian and scholar. He accomplished much in his short thirty-three years of life. Andrew was a certified and skilled Radiographic Technologist who took pride in helping people. He earned a B.A. Degree in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Faculty Award and Certificate in Radiographic Technology from UNC-CH. During high school at Millbrook High, he earned a BSA Heroism Award for saving life and limb on the Appalachian Trail, the Eagle Scout Award from Troop 342, and was also an AP Scholar who graduated in the top 2% of his class. As a younger student, Andrew won the Battle of the Books at West Millbrook Middle School, and received an award from Odyssey of the Mind at North Ridge Elementary.
Andrew will always be remembered for his sweet gentle spirit, his great smile and servant’s heart, always thinking and putting others ahead of himself. Andrew loved to travel and some of his happiest memories were from his semester abroad in Sevilla, Spain, his Birthright trip to Israel, and from vacations with his family. He loved animals, especially his dogs and turtles, and was a talented artist who enjoyed painting, nature, boating, swimming, fishing, skiing, reading, and music, especially by the Beatles. Andrew was truly loving and much loved, and will be missed by all who knew him. He had many close friends, most importantly his partner of more than 10 years and good friend Michael Griffin.
Andrew is survived by his parents Ted and Lisa Mayer; his mentoring older brother Eric, sister in law Julia, and nephews Kennedy and Zachary Mayer; his paternal grandparents Kevin and Marie Mayer; and numerous loving aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Harry and Sara Hytoff.
