Alice Monfredo Cox, 94, passed away peacefully on Oct. 13 surrounded by family. Alice was born in Ruth, NC to Elizabeth and Will Monfredo and lived in the mountains of North Carolina before settling in Raleigh more than 55 years ago.
Alice loved gardening all types of flowers, trees and plants, and was an avid bird watcher, with a particular passion for bluebirds. She was a wonderful cook and her house was always open to all of her children and their friends at any time. On a summer afternoon, you might find her putting up jars of homemade pickles or beating a friend or family member in a game of gin rummy or bridge. She was an excellent amateur photographer and always had a camera at every function. Alice was a member of the Hope Sunday School class at Emmanuel Baptist and was a dedicated church member who served joyfully for decades.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, William Alvis Cox, Sr. She is survived by her children: Thomas Cox (Gwen); Patricia Rogers (Joseph); Bonnie Stewart (Bill); William Cox Jr. (Linda); and Gerald Cox (Liza); 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2100 Noble Rd. in Raleigh with a graveside service in Rutherfordton City Cemetery in Rutherfordton, NC on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. A special thanks to all those who cared for her at Rex Nursing Care Center, and Heartland Hospice during her last few months. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, and we encourage you to plant any sort of purple flower to honor her life.
