Alfred Harris Ellison, 88, of Raleigh passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 21, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. Alfred was born in Boston, MA in 1923 to the late Horace Mann Ellison and Louise Harris Ellison. Al served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he served in World War II in the 15th Air Force, 82nd Fighter Group, 305th Fighter Wing. He was a P-38 pilot and prisoner of war. He was honored to visit the WWII Memorial in 2006 with his family.
Al graduated from Boston College in the Class of 1950, received his masters in chemistry at Tufts University and PhD in surface and colloidal chemistry from Georgetown University. He married the late Marilyn Donovan Ellison in 1951. He worked for the Environmental Protection Agency from 1969 until his retirement in to 1988. His hobbies included playing golf, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his children, Pamela McLendon, Mark Ellison, Sean Ellison, Charles Ellison, and Marilyn Tomei; and grandchildren Ben Brown, Lauren Brown, Kieran Bazonski, Stephen, Kristen, Mark and Jenna Ellison, Grant, Cavan, and Ryan Ellison, and Mimi and Andrew Tomei; great-grandchild Ava Bazonski, and special niece, Pat Flaherty.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church, 5805 Falls of Neuse Rd., Raleigh, 27609. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm, Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd. Raleigh, 27609.
