A.B. was born in Johnston County, NC on March 7, 1930, the son of the late James Henry and Polly Ann Richardson Congleton of Wendell, NC. He was one of five children, and was preceded in death by his sister, Rosa C. O’Neal and brothers, James Harlon and Charles Keith Congleton. He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Anthony B. Congleton and wife, Pam; daughter, Donna C. Reed; five grandchildren, Aubrey C. Starr and husband, Seth, Brandon S. Reed and wife, Casey, Matthew J. Reed, Tyler G. Reed and James A. Congleton. He was well loved by his five great-grandchildren, Caleb, Lily and Aiden Reed and Lucas and Lorelai Starr. He is also survived by one sister, Frances C. Croom of Zebulon, NC and six nieces and nephews.
A.B. graduated from Corinth Holder High School and attended NC State University where he became a loyal Wolfpack fan. He served four years in the US Navy before moving to Raleigh and starting his career with Hudson Belk. During his 38 years of service with Hudson Belk, he was assistant manager at both the Downtown and Crabtree Valley stores, and manager at the Cary store. In addition, he was a vice president with Belk Stores Inc. A.B. was a long time member of Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church where he was a member of the adult Sunday school class and was active in organizing and maintaining the Senior Fellowship Ministry.
A celebration of life service will be held 3pm Sunday, September 24th at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
The family would like to thank Drs. John Lue and Steven Liebowitz and the medical team at Universal Healthcare of Raleigh for their loving care. A very special thank you to Mrs. Ashley Ward who tenderly loved and cared for A.B. during his last year of life.
